Although all speed figures are disputed ,unless it is a world record attempt that is officially recorded ,these I believe are the fastest piston engined aircraft of WW2 .In 1945 the Dornier Do335 "Pfeil" Arrow was recorded at 472 mph in level flight.Roland Beamont wrote of beating up his home airfield at 480mph in his Hawker Tempest at 20feet off the ground.There is no doubt in my mind that there are more than likely people out there who will dispute this but that is what history is all about .You have also to bear in mind that you can have the best engine in the world ,but stick it in the wrong airframe and you will not get the best out of it _________________ "its me again,BANITMAN"
Assuming we are talking WW2 engines here, its probably the Bristol Centaurus 18 cylinder sleeve valve radial engine (the one in the sea fury) it was very strong, could take punishment and still run, (a holed merlin or Griffin had about 5 mins max before it siezed) had more power than most engines of its class and could push the seafure/Tempest MK2 to over 400 mph and leave the Spitfire in its wake. so for me its the Big Bristol in a Hawker airframe.
