Part one: Buildup to d-day.

D-Day, or Operation overlord was to be the greatest ambibious invasion in history, and turned the second world war around.

It was decided that france, in german occupation, and all ints neigboring countries needed to be liberated at all costs. the fate of Britian and other free countries depended on it.
But the risk was terrible.
In the worst case scenario, troops would never make it inland and be wiped out as soon as they landed, and the germans would see it coming and be able to stop it all together.
But the invasion had to happen, otherwise the war could be lost.

And so millions of troops were mustered in England, America and Canada in preperation for the invasion, although they didnt know that, and Neither could the germans.
The germans New that an invasion was imminent, and that they had to fortify france.
Rubber tanks were made everywhere in fake places to fool the germans.
Fake radio messages saying the invasion would take place in calais were deliberately broadcast.
A german ambassador being taken to London in the back of a car was deliberately given a gap in the blacked out windows and drove past the massive rows of soldiers getting ready for the invasion with fake sighns saying "Scotland" when in fact he was in southern england just so he could tell his German mates about the invasion, which was *Cough* being readied in scotland.

Field marshall rommel partly took the bait, and fortified the calais beaches all over with tanktraps, sea mines, landmines and obstacles and towering bunkers.
But Rommel was a clever man, so decided to fortify the Normandy coastline aswell, where the real invasion would take place.
And so it was decided that the invasion would take place in normany.
Not only would thousands of landing craft with infantry, tanks and weapons, but also there would be a huge airborne invasion involving thousands of paratroopers and gliders full of troops.

The invasion was set.

Part 2. Gliders

The landing craft assembled in the ocean and waited for the all-clear.
fighters constantly circled around to stop any enemies seeing the impending invasion force.

The invasion was postponed many times before finally getting the go ahead.
C47 Dakotas carrying paratroopers prepared to take off, but first came the glider landings.

The British 6th Airborne Division was the first full unit to go into action, at sixteen minutes past midnight, in Operation Tonga. One set of objectives was Pegasus Bridge and other bridges on the rivers at the east flank of the landing area. The bridges were very quickly captured by glider forces and held until relieved by the Commandos later on D-Day. Another objective was a large gun battery at Merville. Although this larger glider and paratroop force was widely scattered, the battery was destroyed. However, the diminished assault team suffered 50% casualties in the attack.

Good posts so far, but not wishing to throw a spanner in the works, I was surprised by this bit.

I am aware that there were 'odd' goings on on the build up to D-Day, but a German ambassador being driven to London in 1944? Do you have access to a source of information that has been able to get past the 100 year ban? Confused
I would be most interested to read the report.
